For much of psychology, we rely on questionnaires or interviews, but people can lie in these; we rely on undergraduate students, but these are rarely representative of the population as a whole; and there are many questions that we cannot ethically or practically address in classroom teaching. In Wild Behaviour, we study real people, expressing real behaviours under natural conditions.
For much of bioscience, we rely on studies of laboratory populations that have evolved under artificial selection, but these may have lost innate behaviours; we rely on animals held in artificial housing, but these may not exhibit the range of stimuli or risks that animals naturally encounter; and there are many questions that we cannot tackle in a short 3 hour practical. In Wild Behaviour, we study natural populations of animals able to express their behaviours in natural habitats. |
